BALTIMORE (AP) - Doctors expressed optimism Wednesday night after performing surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon of Baltimore Colts' quarterback John Unitas.
The veteran quarterback injured his right foot while playing paddle ball Wednesday, and underwent 75 minutes of surgery, starting at 6 p.m.
"The surgery confirmed the early diagnosis of a ruptured Achilles tendon," Colts' spokesman said. "The tendon was separated about two inches above the right heel. The separation was repaired and Colt doctors are optimistic about the surgery."
Unitas is expected to be in a cast for about six weeks.
Baltimore halfback Tom Matte, who was playing with Unitas when he was injured, drove Unitas to Union Memorial Hospital.
Later, when Matte drove to Havre de Grace, Md., on a business trip, he suffered an attack of bleeding ulcers and also has been admitted to the same hospital.
Unitas, the leading passer of all time, holds records for the most attempts, most completions, most touchdowns and most yardage gained.
The 38-year-old veteran of 15 years in the National Football League was injured about 11 a.m., the Colts said.
General Manager Don Koster- man of the Colts said the prog- nosis for recovery was good.
"I am told the prognosis is good. Possibly he will play this season," Klosterman said.
When asked about preparing backup quarterback, Klosterman said "Well, we are very fortunate to have Earl Morrall and George Mira, Sam Havrilak and Fred Dan

Weeks ago...Don Klosterman, General Manager of the Colts, dropped me a line inquiring about my reason for using "PK" on the World Champion Colts. I answered and explained that I must demonstrate each year...my incredible powers...by holding back the winner of the Pro Championship the following season...as I have done with the Jets and Kansas City Chiefs...and now must do with the Colts.
I warned Mr. Klosterman and Mr. Rosenbloom Sr. specifically and clearly that my mental attack had already been placed in motion against the Colts...was effecting them now...and if they intended to hire me they had better do it quickly before the PK began to tear the team apart.
(You don't believe this? Then check with the two gentlemen.)
They ignored me (always a terrible mistake, but no one seems to learn from it) and so two of their fine stars are zonked...Unitas and Matte, both in the same hospital at the same time...both struck down in the same relative time period of 24 hours.
Also just recently my number two target, PK target, the Cowboys...have had two star players (one their quarterback, also) and one of their coaches zonked.
And the regular season hasn't even begun yet!
I keep on giving these fantastic demonstrations of how 150-some-odd other-dimensional powers can take pro teams apart, stop them cold, etc., yet none of them seems to want this hair-raising power on their side! This, to me, is unbelievable.
Last year I stopped approx. fifty million dollars worth of pro football teams. This coming season...let's see...what's thirteen times ten million?

Dear Mr. Owens:
Your correspondence with Don Klosterman, General Manager of my football team, has been brought to my attention and I must confess absolute concern of what I have read.
For the life of me, I can't understand what the Colts have done to warrant a place on your list of losers for the 1971 season. Please believe me when I request that you remove us from your list of losers. If you will please advise me as to a course of action which we could follow to have us removed from this category, I will do whatever I can to comply. I note with a great deal of interest your record of accomplishments and trust you will intervene with the SI's on our behalf.
Should you journey to either the Miami or Baltimore area, I would enjoy meeting with you to learn more about your power to communicate with the SI's and your psycho-kinetic powers in general.
I thank you for considering this request.
Sincerely,
Carroll Rosenbloom
