That very night... a huge storm center began OVER TEXAS...produced tornados and hurricane winds... and extended a thousand miles to Virginia, where I was talking from. After that came hot winds that blasted half the Texas wheat crop. May 10, 1974 ## Summer Look at Tropics WASHINGTON (UPI)--Scientists, ships, planes, buoys, and satellites from 66 nations will study the weather and seas of a third of earth's tropics this summer in the largest such international scientific expedition ever mounted. Some of the world's most advanced environmental measuring instruments will gather information on a 20-million-square-mile band of land and sea from the eastern Pacific across the Atlantic to the western Indian Ocean. The goal of the unprecedented project is to close a major gap in meteorology and build an understanding of the role the tropics play in shaping earth's global weather patterns. This knowledge is expected to help scientists devise ways to eventually predict weather a week or more in advance with reasonable accuracy. The atmosphere's circulation is driven by heat from the sun. Half the sunshine that falls on earth goes to the tropics and that is the only area to receive more energy from the sun than it loses in radiation back into space. Much of this surplus heat is stored in the tropical oceans and then is transferred to the air. It is carried upward in massive tropical cloud systems and transported around the world by high-level winds. "This area is the boiler of the giant heat engine that runs our atmosphere," said Dr. Verner Suomi, chairman of the U.S. committee for the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP). "We want to better understand the parts of the global weather machine and how it runs." The project is called GATE for GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment. It is sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, and by the International Council of Scientific Unions. The 101-day study will draw on 4,000 scientists and other personnel, 38 ships, 65 buoys, 13 aircraft, and six kinds of American and Soviet satellites to observe conditions from the top of the atmosphere to 5,000 feet deep in the oceans. The experiment has been in the planning stage for five years and is scheduled to begin June 15. American logistics aircraft already are flying to the project headquarters in Dakar, Senegal, and some of 12 Russian ships to participate have left port in Vladivostok. For its part, the United States will supply nine ships operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Coast Guard, the space agency, University of Miami, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Rhode Island, and Texas A&M University. Eight U.S. aircraft will take part along with with several civilian and military weather satellites, including a new generation weather watcher scheduled for launch May 16 from Cape Canaveral. Dr. Robert M. White, NOAA administrator, said at a news conference held by 18 officials that the project will cost $53 million. Russia and the United States are each contributing about $18 million. During the experiment, weather systems ranging in size from a fraction of a mile to hundreds of miles across will be observed simultaneously by the satellites, ships, and planes at sea and a network of land stations in Latin America, South America, and Africa. So here, speaking as a master psychic..........is my information to you: (1) The Symbionese Liberation Army and the Zebra Killers are one and the same group. Virginian-Pilot, Friday, April 26, 1974 A17 # Texas Panhandle Wheat Lost AMARILLO, Tex. (AP) -- The Texas Panhandle's dryland wheat crop is lost, the victim of a severe drought, bugs, and several weeks of hot, blustery winds. The cost to farmers: $160 million, perhaps more. Officials in Washington say the impact nationally is minimal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that with the exception of some drought areas of New Mexico and western Texas, this year's crop is "generally good in all areas of the nation." And dealers note that wheat prices, while somewhat higher, don't appear to be reflecting the Texas drought. But the economy of the Panhandle, already crippled by plunging cattle prices, is headed for another shock. Texas usually produces about 5 per cent of the nation's wheat, much of it grown in the Panhandle. If there had been a decent rainfall by April 15, some of the crop might have been salvaged. There was little rain. "In this immediate area I don't think any dryland wheat can be saved," says Arnold Prichard of the Producer's Grain Corp. With no water, the wheat never had a chance. Any sprigs surviving the dry spell were snipped off by insects, mostly green bugs. Even irrigated wheat has suffered from drought and bugs. "Our irrigation wells have to have some help from mother nature," says Milton Johnson of the Producer's Grain Corp. Prichard tells of an irrigation farmer near Bovina, Tex., who watered his 600 acres five times, sprayed insecticide three times, and says now: "Hell, even if wheat was $5 a bushel I couldn't get my money out of it." Knowledgeable producers forecast a Texas wheat crop of less than 50 million bushels, about half the 1973 harvest. "When we have a wheat loss in Texas it touches everybody somewhere -- this is spending money," says Bill Nelson, executive vice president of the Texas Wheat Producers Association. Nelson, who put the wheat loss at $160 million, said the loss simply plucks that much from the national cash register. The drought is so bad that there was no young wheat suitable for cattle grazing. Farmers rent their land to cattlemen in winter and spring when the wheat is two or three inches tall, then the cattle are removed and the crop matures. A-9 # Are UFOs taking a look at Dallas-Fort Worth airport? By BILL CASE Times Herald Metropolitan Staff Are Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and their crews maintaining regular observation vigils on a hill along the west boundaries of the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport at night? Five witnesses from three families have told airport officials and Federal Aviation Administration officers they believe something like that may be happening. All report numerous UFO takeoff sightings and extremely low level flights westward away from the airport during the hours of darkness between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. The flights occurred during the last six to eight months, they said. Mrs. Sandra Hodgson, 36, a medical technician employed at Irving Community Hospital, who lives in an apartment complex at 2805 Mustang Drive, Grapevine, told The Times Herald she has had numerous sightings en route home from work. "After sighting the lights, which seem to travel and hover at just about tree-top level, on several nights I reported the UFOs to the FAA control tower at D-FW Airport and to George Burledge at the FAA's Fort Worth regional headquarters," she said. "They advised me to try and get a picture of one so I got out my camera on Thursday night and, when a UFO appeared east of our apartment building about 200 yards away, I took a shot." Mrs. Hodgson's picture shows a small jagged twisting yellow light against a pitch black sky. No size or shape of the object is discernable. However, it appears to be moving west from left to right in the classic patterns of the UFO flights away from D-FW airport. Fascinated by the phenomenon. Mrs. Hodgson said one night last week while watching the unusual lights she and a friend, Debbie Carter, 17, who lives in the same apartment complex, got in their car and followed it. "It stopped down a small road over a patch of woods about a mile east of us and beamed a strong white searchlight down into a clearing," she said. "When we got there the light was still hovering in the air over a clearing where a Mexican-American family live in a converted construction building." Mrs. Hodgson and Miss Carter said they found Mr. and Mrs. Lucio Perez and his brother, Leonardo Perez, standing in the clearing looking up at the light. Perez, who does not speak English, took Mrs. Hodgson's photo of the UFO and pointed to the same place in the sky where she and Miss Carter said they saw the object with its searchlight hovering directly over them." He also indicated with gestures the UFO lights appeared to be coming from the field at the edge of the airport. The point they indicated where the lights took off is on a hill providing a panoramic view of the entire airport. Reporters who trudged through high grass and weeds to the fence line reported they found a circular area of grass and weeds about 20 feet in diameter twisted down in a clockwise pattern. It appeared something had set down on them. Mrs. Hodgson, who said many of her neighbors have seen the lights but do not like to discuss them, believes occupants of the UFOs are attempting to contact humans on earth. "But judging from accounts of the way people have acted toward UFOs and their occupants in other sightings elsewhere, I guess they feel we are hostile," she said. "But I'd give anything to contact them." The only noise Mrs. Hodgson said she has heard during a sighting was a hum similar to that of an electric generator. One hundred and fifty officers, organized in special teams, were deployed in six zones of the city where the slayings occurred. The officers carried composite drawings of the killer, or one of the killers, presenting him as a black between 5 feet 9 and 6 feet of slender medium build with a moustache and frequently wearing a watch cap. Robert Brooks, 23, attired in a long black coat and a knit hat while waiting for a bus, said he was spotted by plainclothes men and interrogated in their car for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, traffic and other checks were conducted on him by radio. (UPI) - The FBI Friday disclosed that an alert had been issued in the Carolinas and Florida for suspected members of the Symbionese Liberation Army, wanted for the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst. Harold C. Swanson, special agent in charge of the South Carolina FBI office, said Marlboro County authorities had received an anonymous telephone tip that a black male, believed to be a member of the SLA, had attempted to purchase a gun in the small town of McColl. The town is located just south of the border with North Carolina. Swanson emphasized that there was "nothing concrete at this time" but he said authorities were running a thorough investigation, which included an alert for a blue automobile in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida. Swanson said the car was carrying three black males and two females, one of whom was white. May 4, 1974 # 5/5/74 # N.C. Alert Issued for 'Hearst Car' CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A statewide alert was issued in North Carolina Saturday for a red late-model car with California license plates which police said may have carried a passenger who resembled Patricia Hearst. Capt. R. E. Phillips, who issued the alert, said a woman told police that she saw the car, a Buick, going north from Charlotte Saturday. The woman said the car contained three black males and one white female who met the general description of Miss Hearst, Phillips said. Phillips said he had no other indication that the 20-year-old daughter of newspaper executive Randolph A. Hearst or members of the Symbionese Liberation Army were in the state. The SLA has claimed responsibility for kidnapping Miss Hearst from her apartment in Berkeley, Calif., on Feb. 4. "The reason I authorized this to be put out is that I don't want a police officer to approach this car if this is the SLA or members of it or anything like it," he said. "I don't want them walking up on this car without knowing what they were approaching and getting blown in two." # 5/6/74 # No More On Car Sighting MONROE, N.C. (UPI) - North Carolina authorities Sunday said there had been no further reports on a car seen Saturday carrying three black men and a woman resembling kidnaped heiress Patricia Hearst. An alert remained in effect for the red Buick with California license plates, but Charlotte Police Capt. R. E. Phillips said, "I haven't heard of anyone stopping one." The car, according to a witness, was seen at an intersection here early Saturday carrying three black men and a white woman who fit "the general description of Patricia Hearst," said Phillips. The FBI in Charlotte declined to comment on the reports. "I had a decision to make," Phillips said. "There aren't that many red Buicks with California plates in this state. If some officer had approached such a car not knowing about this report and gotten killed, I could never have slept again." He said the witness said he spotted the car about 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 74 and U.S. 601. Monroe is about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte. Saturday's report was the second in as many days. South Carolina officials Friday said they received an anonymous tip that a man, who resembled a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army that claimed credit for the Hearst kidnapping, attempted to buy a gun in McColl, a small city near the South Carolina-North Carolina border about 80 miles from Charlotte. The original alert, issued by the FBI in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, was for a blue car carrying three black men and two women, one white and one black. "There's no telling where these people are at," Phillips said. "We're not taking it lightly. DALLAS TIMES HERALD, Sun., May 12, 1974 ••• A-9 By BILL CASE Times Herald Metropolitan Staff Are Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and their crews maintaining regular observation vigils on a hill along the west boundaries of the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport at night? Two witnesses from three families have told airport officials and Federal Aviation Administration officers they believe something like that may be happening. All report numerous UFO takeoff sightings and extremely low level flights westward away from the airport during the hours of darkness between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. The flights occurred during the last six to eight months, they said. Mrs. Annie Hodgson, 35, a medical technician employed at Irving Community Hospital, who lives in an apartment complex at 2205 Mustang Drive, Grapevine, told the Times Herald she has had numerous sightings en route home from work. "After sighting the lights, which seem to travel and hover at just about tree-top level, on several nights I reported the UFOs to the FAA control tower at D-FW Airport and to George Burledge at the FAA's Fort Worth regional headquarters," she said. "They advised me to try and get a picture of one so I got out my camera on Thursday night and, when a UFO appeared east of our apartment building about 200 yards away, I took a shot." Mrs. Hodgson's picture shows a small jagged twisting yellow light against a pitch black sky. No size or shape of the object is discernable. However, it appears to be moving from left to right in the classic patterns of the UFO flights away from D-FW airport. Fascinated by the phenomenon, Mrs. Hodgson said one night last week while watching the unusual lights she and a friend, Debbie Carter, 17, who lives in the same apartment complex, got in their car and followed it. "It stopped down a small road over a patch of woods about a mile east of us and beamed a strong white searchlight down into a clearing," she said. "When we got there the light was still hovering in the air over a clearing where a Mexican-American family live in a converted construction building." Mrs. Hodgson and Miss Carter said they found Mr. and Mrs. Lucio Perez and his brother, Leonardo Perez, standing in the clearing looking up at the light. Perez, who does not speak English, told Mrs. Hodgson's photo of the UFO and pointed to the same place in the sky where she and Miss Carter said they saw the object with its searchlight hovering directly over them. He also indicated with gestures the UFO lights appeared to be coming from the field at the edge of the airport. The point they indicated where the lights took off is on a hill providing a panoramic view of the entire airport. Reporters who trudged through high grass and weeds to the fence line reported they found a circular area of grass and weeds about 20 feet in diameter twisted down in a clockwise pattern. It appeared something had sat down on the spot. Mrs. Hodgson, who said many of her neighbors have seen the lights but do not like to discuss them, believes occupants of the UFOs are attempting to contact humans on earth. "But judging from accounts of the way people have acted toward UFOs and their occupants in other sightings elsewhere, I guess they feel we are hostile," she said. "But I'd give anything to contact them." The only noise Mrs. Hodgson said she has heard during a sighting was a hum similar to that of an electric generator. Ted Freeze nips Dallas debut of spring Somebody forgot to shut the door on winter, or so it seemed Thursday to North Texans who stepped out on the first full day of spring. A spine-shivering low of 31 degrees was recorded at 8 a.m. Thursday, not a new record but sharply contrasting with readings in the 80s in which residents basked last week. The coldest March 21, when it was 27 degrees, was in 1948. More cold weather was predicted for early Friday morning. A low temperature of 30 degrees will pose hazards for numerous varieties of flowers and other early blossoming plants, National Weather Service forecasters said. Partly cloudy skies Friday were predicted to accompany slightly warmer readings, in the upper 50s. Northwest winds with gusts up to 25 m.p.h., following a fast-moving cold front, will diminish by Friday morning, according to weather forecasters. Precipitation was forecast for some parts of Texas Thursday, ranging from possible showers and thunderstorms in the north to occasional snow in the Panhandle. Large areas of the state were under tornado watches Wednesday night and at least two were reported on the ground. One hit the southeast town of San Augustine, felling trees and toppling trailer homes. At one trailer park, one person was injured. A tree fell on a passing automobile, but no one was hurt. Another twister hit the ground four times in Beaumont, but did little damage. No injuries were reported. Temperatures were spread across a wide range. Amarillo shivered Wednesday under a high reading of 40. McAllen sweltered in 96-degree heat, the highest in the nation. An official .52 inch of rain Wednesday pushed the Dallas total for 1974 to 3.57 inches, compared to the normal 6.78 inches that fall through the month. Virginian-Pilot, Friday April 26, 1974 A17 Texas Panhandle Wheat Lost AMARILLO, Tex. (AP) -- The Texas Panhandle's dryland wheat crop is lost, the victim of a severe drought, bugs and several weeks of hot, blustery winds. The cost to farmers: $140 million, perhaps more. Officials in Washington say the impact nationally is minimal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that with the exception of some drought areas of New Mexico and western Texas, this year's crop is "generally good in all areas of the nation." And dealers note that wheat prices, while somewhat higher, don't appear to be reflecting the Texas drought. But the economy of the Panhandle, already crippled by plunging cattle prices, is headed for another shock. Texas usually produces about 5 per cent of the nation's wheat, and much of it grows in the Panhandle. If there had been a decent rainfall by April 15, some of the crop might have been salvaged. There was little rain. "In this immediate area I don't think any dryland wheat can be saved," says Arnold Prichard of the Producer's Grain Corp. With no water, the wheat never had a chance. Any sprigs surviving the dry spell were snipped off by insects, mostly green bugs. Even irrigated wheat has suffered from drought and bugs. "Our irrigation wells have to have some help from mother nature," says Milton Johnson of the Producer's Grain Corp. Prichard tells of an irrigation farmer near Bovina, Tex., who watered his 800 acres five times, sprayed insecticide three times, and says now: "Hell, even if wheat was $5 a bushel I couldn't get my money out of it." Knowledgeable producers forecast a Texas wheat crop of less than 50 million bushels, about half the 1973 total. "When we have a wheat loss in Texas it touches everybody somewhere -- this is spending money," says Bill Nelson, executive vice president of the Texas Wheat Producers Association. Nelson, who put the wheat loss at $140 million, said the loss simply plucks that much from the national cash register. The drought is so bad that there was no young wheat available for cattle grazing. Farmers rent their land to cattlemen in winter and spring when the wheat is two or three inches tall, then the cattle are removed and the crop matures. Virginian-Pilot, Saturday, Feb. 16, 1974 Panhandle Quake Rocks 3 States PERRYTON, Tex. (AP) -- An earthquake centered in the Panhandle shook parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas Friday. There were no reports of injuries. "It shook the rafters," said Mrs. Richard Burke of Perryton. The United States Geological Service said some walls were cracked in Perryton but no major damage was reported. The service said the quake was located between Perryton and Borger, Tex. The seismograph center at Boulder, Colo., said the center was 10 miles south of Perryton. It also was felt in Spearman, Pampa, and Borger and surrounding Texas towns, and in Guymon, Goodwell and Hardesty, Okla., and Liberal, Kan. The Geological Service said the tremor registered between 4 and 4.5 on the Richter scale. The Richter scale is a measure of ground motion recorded on a seismograph. Every increase of one number means a 10-fold increase in magnitude. A quake with a reading of 4 can cause moderate damage and one of 5 considerable damage. A man in Beaver, Okla., said the tremor caused dishes to rattle in his home and also resulted in a few minor cracks in the walls. "We heard a sort of rumbling and felt it for a few seconds," said George Riffe, a resident of Beaver, Okla. A-8 Richmond Times-Dispatch, Fri., Mar. 22, 1974 Tornadoes Kill 6; Damage Is Heavy By The Associated Press Tornadoes and high winds swept across the Southeast Thursday, leaving six persons dead and scores injured and causing widespread damage. Winds reached up to 100 miles per hour at Columbus, Ga., where a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said, "It's the strongest wind I've ever seen in the continental United States." The weather service said the storm system developed over Texas Wednesday night, then moved rapidly to the northeast, carrying a mass of cold air that clashed with warm, moist air over the Southeast. The system grew as it moved northeastward and at one point extended 1,000 miles from Virginia south to Georgia and west to Louisiana, according to the weather service. Most of the damage came in predawn hours. In Natchitoches, a city of 18,000 in northern Louisiana, a tornado left a 40-block residential area "a mass of rubble," according to a policeman. Mayor Ray Scott said it was the worst disaster in the city's history and damage could run into millions of dollars. Prichard, 60, a city resident, suffered a fatal heart attack as he sought shelter under a bridge. In Ebarb, another northern Louisiana community hit by a twister, another man was killed when a building collapsed. Four persons were killed in Georgia, including a bride of four weeks who was apparently crushed when her mobile home in Montezuma was lifted off its foundation and blown 20 feet. Third for Town Another tornado bit Conasauga, Tenn. It happened before on the night of Oct. 1, 1933 and again last December. Six houses were demolished and several others were damaged. Six persons were injured. At least 20 persons were injured in Alabama. A boy was severely burned when he touched a fallen power line. A tornado struck Madison General Hospital at Canton, Miss., causing three minor injuries to patients, authorities said. Four persons were hurt at Utica when high winds hit some mobile homes. There were unofficial reports of tornadoes in South Carolina, but no injuries were reported.
